Target announced its support for gay marriage on Tuesday by signing a brief in a federal appeals court case, after years of criticism for its neutrality on the issue.
“It’s our belief that everyone should be treated equally under the law, and that includes the rights we believe people should have regarding marriage,” Target Executive Vice President Jodee Koźlak said in a statement Tuesday.
The retail giant joins a group of national companies signing an amicus brief filed in Wisconsin’s appeal of a lower court decision that struck down that state’s ban on gay marriage.
A similar case in Indiana has been doubled in this case.
Target already offers benefits to LGBT employees and their families. In announcing the measure, Koźlak framed the decision both ideologically and economically, referring to the challenges created by conflicting marriage regulations in different states.
“This position is particularly challenging for a large, nationally operating organization like Target,” Koźlak said.
“Current laws in places like Wisconsin and Indiana, which are addressed in this report, make it difficult to attract and retain talent.
We believe that everyone—every member of our team and our customers—deserves to be treated equally.
And at Target, we’re proud to support the LGBT community.
The major retailer has made an open attempt to openly support the gay and lesbian community. Could it be trying to conspire with the ongoing movement in that direction?
